You will need enough wine bottles so that one can be on each table you would like to serve guests at. You can also make these for a dining room table, so only one or two for personal use.
First, you will remove all the labels and clean the bottles. You may need to use Goo Gone, alcohol swabs, a hard dish brush. It also helps to soak the bottles in warm water and liquid dish soap to make easy removal of the paper labels.
After all the labels have been removed and the bottles are free from any glue residue, leave them to thoroughly dry.
You will need some spray paint supplies to work with from here and a place to work that is away from anything you don’t want to get paint on. You can use an old sheet, drop cloth or another sort of covering for the surface where you will be painting. We recommend quick drying high gloss white paint and another color that will match the decor of your event or home.
The first layer of paint should be a thin layer of the white paint. This will act as a primer on each bottle. When you apply this color make sure you aren’t holding the spray can too close of the paint will be too thick and possibly run on the bottles. Your goal here is a nice thin base coat.
Let this coat dry about 15 minutes and then test the bottle for dryness by touching them lightly. Sticky paint is an indication that it will need a little longer to dry.
Repeat painting each bottle with your primary color as a second layer. If you put your finger in the bottle opening and pick them up, you may be able to improve your angle for painting thin and evenly. You will be doing several coats of this primary color, so don’t worry about having your bottle completely coated until that final coat.
Again, allow the bottles to dry. Keep adding layers of paint until your bottles are thoroughly coated and have the appearance you are looking for, this could take 3 or 4 coats of paint. This is fine; just make sure they are nice thin even layers.
Finally, pick up the bottles and spray around the bottom edge and top lip so that the glass doesn’t show through. This will be just a quick spray. Leave your bottles in a cool dry shaded place until you’re ready to decorate your table with them.
